Memphis is a unique place. It’s a city with a fractured history and quirky reputation.
I moved here 10 months ago to work for its only major professional sports franchise that many native Memphians would argue isn’t even the most popular team in town. The University of Memphis Basketball team has been around longer and has historically drawn bigger crowds then the Grizzlies.
That all changed in April 2011.
The Grizzlies playoff run, led by its slogan, “BELIEVE MEMPHIS,” united this town. Memphians were blindsided. [No pun intended to the movie; also a Memphis story.] Not only did this team win its first playoff game [and series] in franchise history, they did so against the NBA’s top-seeded San Antonio Spurs. An act of fate brought me in the middle of this magical run and took me all the way to a thunderous Oklahoma City Arena for Game 7 of the Conference Semi-Finals.
BELIEVE MEMPHIS was more than a playoff slogan. It symbolized a changing of the guard, a turning of the page, and a brighter tomorrow. The Memphis Grizzlies didn’t just defeat the Spurs and set up the most anticipated season in franchise history. They truly gave their city something to BELIEVE in. In the midst of unprecedented river-flooding, the Grizzlies offered a distraction. No matter how bad things got, the Grizzlies were winning. That was most important. This team showed that while life may be tough, we can persevere if we work together as a unit.
A new motto, “All Heart, Grit and Grind” was born and FedExForum was organically renamed “The Grindhouse.” Memphians felt a part of the team. They took pride in the triumphs and were sick with Grizzlies’ fever. The BELIEVE MEMPHIS shirts, distributed at games, started popping up all over town. These aren’t just normal t-shirts. They are worn with pride. If the Grizzlies can win, then why can’t I? Why can’t Memphis?
I’ve been trying to put this playoff experience into context for a while. The lasting effects are still being felt. Memphis flipped upside down during the playoffs. Time stopped. All was well. When the run was finally over no one seemed angry. There wasn’t a riot (*cough* Vancouver). People took the high road and felt a new found sense of pride in their team and city. Unless you’re a Memphian, you just won’t understand how important the 2011 Grizzlies have proven to be.
I was at every home game and am so grateful for that. I embrace the opportunity to continue representing this team throughout the community. Whether it’s winning on the hardwood or putting mentors in the lives of young people, the Grizzlies have earned the respect and support of their city. I take immense pride in being a part of this organization. People appreciate what I do. That’s what motivates me.
BELIEVE MEMPHIS was something tangible. Memphians are able to take hold of the slogan and apply it to their personal lives. The best years lie ahead for not only the Grizzlies but for this ever-progressing city as well!
